We all recognize that the voice of experience means the most when it comes to making a decision. We often look to friends, colleagues and professionals with specific experience and expertise to help us. That’s why talking to other parents is such a wonderful resource. Their valid ‘been there, done that’ advice can help you determine creative ways to encourage your own child.
Here are some helpful ideas for talking to and learning from other parents:
-
Find out what keeps other children active and motivated. Talk to your friends, family and neighbors about what they do.
-
Share success stories on the GetUp web site so other parents can learn from your creativity. Click here to submit your ideas on what has worked for your child.
-
Organize play time with other parents and children that will be fun and keep the kids active at the same time.
-
Discuss the idea of starting a ‘walking school bus’ if you live close to school. Can you encourage the same idea for kids to get to their after-school program?
-
Find out if other parents are challenged to access fresh fruits and vegetables. Talk about starting a community garden or a food co-op to have fresh produce delivered to the neighborhood. Contact GetUp if you need more information on how to make the right connections to get started.
-
Click here to learn more about the connection between outdoor play and learning. Talk about this with other parents. Ask if they were a ‘free roam’ kid and talk about what has changed our approach to play time.
Encourage creative play and provide an environment that allows your kids to stay active. If that’s not right outside your door, check out your local recreation center and other great places to play listed on our GetUp calendar of events!
