U.S. Docs Say Children Can Start Swim Lessons Earlier

Posted on May 26, 2010

According to this story released today by allheadlinenews.com, the American Academy of Pediatrics is changing its stance on when children should begin swimming lessons, and is now saying parents should decide based on their children’s exposure to the water.

The academy had previously advised against swimming lessons for children ages 1 to 3 because there was a lack of evidence suggesting they prevented drowning. Doctors were also worried parents would have too much confidence in their children's swimming skills and watch them less around pools.

It is always important to monitor your child while swimming and to give them the skills they need for a safe, happy swimming experience.  Several GetUp partners offer swim lessons.  Check the ongoing activities in the GetUp calendar section.
