Posted on Apr 20, 2010
Apparently American's just don't know how to shake the salt habit. According to this Reuters news story, the Institute of Medicine will recommend changes the food industry should take to help decrease the amount of salt in food. Too much salt can cause high blood pressure, which in turn causes strokes, heart disease and kidney failure. While we only need about 1,500 mg of salt a day, the average American eats twice that, more than 3,400 milligrams a day or the equivalent of 1.5 teaspoons of salt.
