GetUp & Get Fit Kids Summer Challenge!
GetUp Montgomery County and the Dayton Dragons are excited to kick-off the GetUp & Get Fit Kids Summer Challenge! There are two fun opportunities for kids to participate, including a video contest! But hurry! This special promotion is just for summer!

1. Kids who track their progress living the 5-2-1-Almost None lifestyle for at least one week will win an autographed Dayton Dragons team print and a chance to participate in a fun GetUp Play Date at Fifth Third Field in early August! There will be giant inflatables to bounce on, games and a chance to play with the team! Tracker sheets must be turned in by August 9 to participate in the Play Date – but can be completed any time through September 5, 2010 for the team print prize. Tracker sheets can be picked up at the stadium, at area summer camps and GetUp partner locations, or downloadable here.

2. Camps or groups of kids, ages 5 – 12, can participate in the GetUp Song or Dance Video Contest! We’re looking for a creative, easy song or dance that includes the words “GetUp” and “5-2-1-Almost None.” Take a video of the best and uplink it to YouTube and then send GetUp the link no later than August 2nd at 5pm! One winner will be selected. The winning camp/group will receive FREE lawn tickets for all participants for the Dragon’s August 22, 2010 home game! And the winning video will be shown on the pre-game Jumbo Scoreboard! Winner will be announced at the August GetUp Play Date. Check out the full contest rules.

Who is leading the Healthy City Challenge?
The Healthy City Challenge between Centerville and Vandalia got off to a fun start as the two Mayors ‘duked’ it out for fun at the ‘neutral’ location of Drakes Downtown Gym in Dayton! Both cities then encouraged citizens to register for the Challenge during their Fourth of July festivities and they will continue to do so at special events throughout the contest period. Remember, you can join in at any time through January 15, 2011. (The contest ends January 31st.) Click here to register.

Points accumulate every day on an easy-to-use, FREE online tracker based on individuals reporting their adoption of the 5-2-1-Almost None lifestyle. Each city also receives event bonus points. Watch the tracker site for announcements of monthly events and monthly prize drawings! The grand prize is a free suite night for your friends and family at a 2011 Dayton Dragons game!

The city-wide point counter appears at the top of the page and is updated every Friday! While these two cities are leading the way toward a healthier Montgomery County, all area residents can participate in health tracking by selecting ‘other’ as their location when registering. We look for more cities and organizations to start official Challenges in the future!

Hot and Handy Trivia!
How about a hot cup of apple?
Apples, not caffeine, are more efficient at waking you up in the morning.

I have B.O. … and so do you!
Your smell is unique: Your body odor is unique to you — unless you have an identical twin. Even babies recognize the individual scents of their mothers.

Bouncing burner
The trampoline is the second fastest calorie burner on the planet.

The Cerebral Sea
Instead of being relatively solid, your brain is 80% water. This means that it is important that you remain properly hydrated for the sake of your mind.

Pass the skillet
Cast iron skillets used to be the leading source of iron in the American diet!

Splish Splash I was Takin’ a Bath!
The days are getting hotter and kids need some outdoor water play! There are several different water attractions around the area that are FREE and open every day of the week. Taking a day to visit is a good way to get outside and move your body while still staying cool.

Thomas Cloud Park in Huber Heights just opened a NEW splash pad! This free entertainment is a 22,000 square-foot spray park with a variety of water features. With 17 different attractions, it includes everything from dump buckets to squirt cannons! The pad is sure to offer a great time for kids. The splash pad is on a timer from 9 am to 9 pm every day, and it is motion activated! If you have any questions about this fun new attraction, call (937) 496-7134.

Two other area parks also offer fun, interactive water features. Island MetroPark has a water play feature open daily from 11 am to 8 pm. Call (937) 275-PARK with questions. RiverScape MetroPark in downtown Dayton also has a great interactive fountain amid its beautiful scenery. Call (937) 274-0126 for more information.

Hot – Hotter – Hottest!
While June sure was a hot one and July is looking even hotter, August tends to be the hottest month of the year in our area! Many children are involved with outdoor activity during the summer which is a great way to exercise and stay healthy. However, it is important to remember to play it safe in the heat. The Children’s Medical Center of Dayton sees many sports-related injuries every summer.

Follow these seven important tips recommended by Dayton Children’s to ensure your kids stay injury free while participating in summer activities. Be sure to:

  1. Get a pre-season medical screening
  2. Follow rules and use proper safety gear
  3. Look for qualified coaching
  4. Do proper conditioning before each workout
  5. Get plenty of water and proper nutrition
  6. Rest
  7. Have a positive focus
For more information on these safety tips visit www.childrensdayton.org.

Do Your Heart Some Good
Doing good for others is always great for your heart – and of course, so is exercise! You can do both at The American Heart Association's 2010 Greater Dayton Start! 5k Heart Walk/Run on September 25 at the Ervin J. Nutter Center. This event promotes physical activity and heart healthy living in an environment that’s fun for the whole family.

Nearly 4,000 people will gather and raise funds to save lives from this country’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers, heart disease and stroke. Walk with friends, family, co-workers, or strangers you’ll bond with along the way. Anyway you choose to do it, your heart will thank you for it!

The area where the walk/run begins and ends is organized into three themed communities: Create Hope, Inspire Change, and Celebrate Success. Visit these communities before and after the walk/run for a health fair, free screenings, health tips, massages, free refreshments, a fun Kids Zone, and more! Call (937) 853-3111 for more information.

On the Panther Patrol
Kiser PreK-8 School in Old North Dayton is gearing up in a big way as part of the national Safe Routes to School program. Teresa Wendell is the site coordinator at Kiser, serving on behalf of GetUp partner, The Salvation Army, in conjunction with the Dayton Public Schools’ and University of Dayton Fitz Center Neighborhood School Centers program. Always cheerful and creative, Teresa is on the hunt for parents and neighborhood business owners to be part of the Kiser Panther Patrol!

The Panther Patrol will play a vital volunteer role in keeping children safe during their walk to/from the neighborhood school. Adults can be involved in the “Walking School Bus” to walk along with groups of children; the “Safe Locations” program, for businesses or homes where kids can go if they find themselves in an unsafe situation; or they can be “Eyes on the Street” to simply keep an eye out from your front porch on the children passing by on their way to/from school.

Teresa even has visions of Panther footprints painted along the route so kids know just where to go! She’s also looking to involve neighborhood businesses to give small incentive rewards, the “Panther Pass,” for participating Panther Patrol volunteers. Keep your tiger’s eye on this program! It is sure to be copied elsewhere! Contact Teresa at (937) 542-6153 if you can help!

Get Fit Tool Kit
There’s really an App for that?
Believe it or not, some really smart people recently came together to determine if more online, interactive games could be developed as an enticement to get today’s ‘hooked in’ kids to be more active and learn more about healthy living. The Apps for Healthy Kids competition is a part of the national Let’s Move! campaign to end childhood obesity within a generation. Apps for Healthy Kids challenged software developers, game designers, students and other innovators to develop fun and engaging software tools and games that drive children, especially “tweens” (ages 9-12) – directly or through their parents – to eat better and be more physically active. The result is 95 very creative entries! Adults and kids alike can vote on their favorite now through August 14. Check it out!

Produce in Prime Time
Not sure where to find your 5 a day fruits and vegetables? This time of the year is the prime season for all of the fresh fruits and vegetables that are so good to eat! Stop by an area Farmer’s market or consider making an ongoing commitment to eat fresh by joining Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). CSAs are becoming a very popular way to enjoy a bountiful harvest while supporting local growers.

With a CSA, you commit to a monthly or seasonal fee which in essence gives you "shares" in the farm. Typically, the share consists of a weekly box or bag of seasonal produce. Other farm products may be included, such as locally-grown honey or other specialties. The farmer determines what goes into the bag based on the harvest – giving you the anticipation of exploring new recipes with each bag! Depending on the practices of the CSA, your weekly harvest may be delivered to your home or it may have a central pick-up location. Participating in a CSA is a great way to ensure that you always have nutritional foods in your home to cook for your friends and family! One local CSA is Farm2Fork Fresh.

There are Farmers markets to choose from in the Dayton and Montgomery County area where you can make a purchase without being a part of a CSA. Some may also offer the CSA option. Be sure to visit these weekly Farmers Markets during this prime produce season:
Be Wise – Immunize!
It’s hard to believe but it won’t be long now before schools will be opening for the new school year! It is very important to make sure that children are up-to-date on their immunizations. Child care, Head Start, pre-school and schools all require some type of immunizations to keep children healthy – and there are some important changes this year.

The first change is that all children enrolled for Kindergarten 2010 must receive two doses of the varicella (chicken pox) vaccine. The second change is for any child entering 7th grade for Fall 2010. These students must receive a TDAP (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertusis) vaccine before attending school.

Click here to view an Immunization Summary which includes the full requirements for each grade. Need to know where you can go to get your child immunized? Public Health – Dayton & Montgomery County offers immunization clinics all around Montgomery County. Click here to see the full schedule.

More “F as in Fat”
The report is in. The good news is Ohio has slightly fewer adults who are overweight and obese this year compared to last year, according to the latest findings reported in the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation 2010 “F as in Fat” report. The bad news is we’re still the 13th fattest in the nation!! Yep, that’s out of 50 states, folks. The research reviews state-by-state levels of overweight, obesity, diabetes, physical inactivity and hypertension among adults, and separately among children. To learn more, download the 2010 “F as in Fat” report here.

Be sure to visit the GetUp Wellness Policies page and School Policies page regularly for updates on information you need to know!
