What Commitment?
So you made the commitment to live 5-2-1-Almost None … now what? It's simple really. Just follow the four steps of 5-2-1-Almost None every day and you will be on your way to a healthier you! And if you are healthier, you will be a role model to influence your family, friends and co-workers. While we know that changing our behavior isn't easy, it also isn't impossible! A wealth of resources is available to help you. Find them on our GetUp website – or through one of our partner organizations. It is amazing just how many local resources are available to help you with better nutrition or to add more physical activity into your daily routine! Start small. Hot and Handy Trivia!
Thirst Quencher
By the time a person feels thirsty, his or her body has lost over one percent of its total water amount.

Just Like Grandma Used to Make?
Research show that only 43 percent of homemade dinners served in the United States include vegetables.

You Say Potato, I Say … Stop!
In the United States, a pound of potato chips costs two hundred times more than a pound of potatoes. And Americans eat 1.2 billion pounds of potato chips a year.

A Hunka, Hunka Burnin' … Fat!
Burning an extra 150 calories a day can help you lose 10 pounds in one year.

A Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On
The average American consumes more than 3,400 mg of sodium each day, or about 50 percent more than recommended. Analysts estimate that population-wide reductions in sodium could prevent more than 100,000 deaths annually. Fruits and vegetables are low or no sodium foods!

The Food Revolution
Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution television series offered an amazing inside look at the challenges of serving healthy school meals under today's budget and USDA nutritional guidelines. What can we do locally to inspire change in eating habits at school and at home? One thought Jamie left us with is to teach every child 10 recipes so they know how to cook with fresh produce and quality ingredients. By doing so, children and families can become much more self-sustaining, even in today's challenging economic times. Check out our recipe of the month below. Visit a farmer's market. Learn to cook a new vegetable! Watch this quick video on how to use the MyPyramid online meal planner.

Honoring Loved Ones
Did you know that today's youth are now experiencing chronic diseases that were previously only found in adults, like Type II diabetes and other long-term health concerns? It's time to GetUp and stop this alarming trend. Honor your loved ones by ensuring a healthy family line today and into the future. Start by helping your family commit to getting at least one hour of 'active play' every day. Start a new family tradition this Memorial Day (and every day)! Take a walk together after the cookout! Roller skate on the bike path! Get in the pool with the kids! Run through the sprinkler! Look for more ideas and a calendar of local activities on the GetUp website. Commit to finding active fun your family will enjoy together!

1000 Mile Walk
This fun, local program just started up again on May 9, so it's not too late to join in! Here's how it works: get five people (recommended) together to form a team. Each individual should walk about eight miles total in a week (for example, commit to a two mile walk, just four days a week.) Sign up and track your team miles at www.1000milewalk.org. The 'competition' continues through October 31. If you stick to the plan, your team will complete 1000 miles by the end of the program and you will be rewarded with a certificate and other ceremonious goodies! The bigger reward, of course, is a healthier you and a fun time with family and friends! This program was developed and is directed by K. Chris Chung, MD.

National Bike to Work Day
Here's a perfect opportunity to try out a new direction! National Bike to Work Day is Friday, May 21. Change your daily commute – all or part – into a 'healthier for you' bike ride! Five Rivers MetroParks will host a breakfast for riders at 2nd Street Market and the Centerville-Washington Township Park District will host an evening celebration and information session. Check the GetUp activities calendar for details on the day's events.

Arugula isn't Just for Billy Goat Gruff
Arugula is an aromatic, peppery salad green. It is very popular in Italian cuisine and grows wild in Asia and all over the entire Mediterranean. It has been cultivated and enjoyed in places as exotic as the north of Sudan. Luckily for us, it is grown on several local farms and is in season in the spring and fall. Arugula has uses beyond salad. It can be sautéed or cooked in many other ways. Click this link for more than 20 scrumptious arugula recipes!

Tracking Your Food Intake
It's true what they say. Write it down and you'll remember. When it comes to realizing just how much food you are consuming every day, write it down! It is the best and only way to get a clear picture of just how much is too much. Several free trackers are available to help including MyPlate at Lance Armstrong's livestrong.com. Check it out! If you have diabetes, MyPlate D adds insulin tracking.

Tools for Healthy Communities
Legislation Moving Forward: Speak Up!
In Ohio, one in three children born is overweight by age 8. We see the devastating effects of childhood obesity in our hospitals everyday – as these Ohio children are at higher risk for diabetes, asthma, poor mental health and chronic medication use. Last year, The Children's Medical Center of Dayton joined with fellow health care providers, Ohio's business leaders, children's advocates and other stakeholders to create the Healthy Choices for Healthy Children coalition. The coalition's first priority is supporting the passage of the Healthy Choices for Healthy Children legislation - Senate Bill 210 and House Bill 373 - because it is a critical first step in addressing the epidemic of childhood obesity in Ohio.

Over the next couple weeks, this legislation is expected to pass out of committee and be put on the floor for a vote in both chambers of the legislature. We're asking you to join us to be a voice for children in our community. To write your legislator about this important issue, please visit Dayton Children's Legislative Action Center. Please click on "take action." You will be asked to put in your name and address and then will be taken to a page where you can customize a letter to send to your State Senator and State Representative. Please personalize this note as much as possible so that your legislators understand why this issue is so important to you.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Jessica Saunders, community relations manager at Dayton Children's, at (937) 641-3385 or saundersj@childrensdayton.org. For more information about the legislation visit: http://www.healthychoiceshealthychildren.org/. Dayton Children's is a GetUp Montgomery County partner and Hub member!

U.S. National Physical Activity Plan
On May 3, a newly recommended U.S. National Physical Activity Plan was released by a group of leading experts in the field of health and education. The plan is comprised of recommendations in eight societal sectors: Business and Industry; Education; Health Care; Mass Media; Parks, Recreation, Fitness and Sports; Public Health; Transportation; Land Use and Community Design; and Volunteer and Non-Profit. Click here to learn more. Visit the GetUp Wellness Policies page and School Policies page regularly for updates on information you need to know!

Partners Connect the Dots
Did you know GetUp has over 100 community partner organizations? By bringing great local organizations together for one common cause, some really neat things are happening! For example, the Junior League of Dayton is now working with the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery to update the Museum's kid's grocery store demo area. And Children's Hunger Alliance was able to reach out to High Rise Services, an after school tutoring program, to share information on a grant they have available for meal funding. Is your worksite or school a GetUp partner yet? Encourage them to join us!

Next Partner Meeting
Getup partners will meet again on Thursday, May 20 at 3 p.m. at the OSU Extension offices, located at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds. Check your emails for RSVP info.
